Notes from an airport in Switzerland

I’m sitting in the Zurich airport waiting to see if I can get the free public WiFi to work.   I am not optimistic.  I have no luck with free WiFi in US airports…I have no idea why Europe would treat me any differently.

Flight was pretty uneventful.  Seatmate was a nice young woman who was not overly talkative, but friendly.  Movie selection sucked and I watched most of the Merryl Streep movie about Margaret Thatcher (Iron Lady, I think) and tried to sleep for most of the flight.  Food on the flight got mixed reviews from me.  I always get the vegetarian option, which can sometimes backfire.  Dinner was good…some sort of Middle Eastern trio with an eggplant dish, couscous, and a chickpea dish.  Yummo.  Breakfast, OTOH, was not so good.  This is the Vegan backfire.  Airlines often make vegetarian meals vegan, to cover a larger group.  Instead of the yogurt and cheese and berry filled roll thingie, I got an applesauce cup and two mini slices of rye bread with margarine.  And the rye bread…not so fresh.  It ended up being a blessing in disguise as anything dairy would have probably tipped me over the allergic edge.

Yes, I am traveling with the beginnings of a sinus infection.  Awesomeness….Luckily, I’ve kept it under control by drinking lots of hot black tea and orange juice.  Avoiding dairy is also good, although I could not resist an apricot almond croissant (buttery goodness) and a milchkaffee (similar to a latte) in the airport here when I landed.

When I landed, I had to go a mini-security screening and found that they hadn’t assigned my gate yet.  Due to this I was forced, yes forced I tell you, to hang out in the duty-free shopping area.  I managed to find an eatery….but shopping called.  Scearce,  I found 14 dollar Swiss shot glasses.  I’m taking the chance that you would think that was as ridiculous as I do, so I did not get one…despite the fact that they did have them shaped like bier steins…lol.

However, I did get myself a Swiss birthday present.  It was like I was 20 years old all over again.  I bought a Swatch (yes Patti, I can see you laughing).  But it’s KEWL.  It is purple (of course) and larger than the old ones I have AND you can see the multi-colored innards.  When I get to the apartment and unpack the cameras, I’ll take a photo.

Oh look, they want money for unsecured WiFi in the Airport.  Cheap buttheads.  No thanks, I’ll upload this when I get to Vienna.

Anyway, this is my first ever time standing on  European soil, which is pretty awesome.  I saw the Alps!  I am so easy to impress…lol.

Well, this teeny tiny keyboard gets on my nerves at the best of times…and I’ve really had no sleep, so I am going to end this now.  It is 9:40 am local time (I don’t even want to think about what time my brain thinks it is) and the Vienna flight leaves at 10:25.  Less than an hour to go before I’m Vienna bound!  Auf Wiedersehen!
