My 60th Birthday Bash - Barcelona Day 1

Ok gang, Barcelona is not the main purpose of this trip, it's a nice side adventure.  I am taking a Mediterranean cruise for the majority of this excursion and Barcelona happens to be my departure port.  I have about 2 and a half days to check it out.

I got here in the morning and my hotel room was not ready.  That usually doesn't happen, even though a hotel advertises a specific check in time, they usually let you check in a bit early.  Not this hotel.  I was able to leave my bags and head out to Las Ramblas. I mostly checked out the atmosphere and architecture.

This cool dragon was a favorite

He's part of this cool, Asian themed building.  Most of the street was under construction, so a bit messy.  I managed to navigate around though.   I was hungry and decided to stop at one of the overpriced tourist trap sidewalk places in the middle of Las Ramblas.

Prime people watching anyway, which was nice.  Also prime spot for street scammers.  I experienced a mime who squeeked instead of talking (who got her white face paint on my hand) and a guy from Africa who clamped a cheap bangle on my arm and asked for money for his baby.

Lunch finally came, a nice salad and a huge glass of sangria.  Note that this was my first actual meal of the day.  That is a lot of wine...just sayin...

I spent the rest of the day a little drunk.  Not complaining...

I took a walk along the waterfront and had an ice cream bar.  This is the old port, Port Vell, where all of the yachts live.

Cool tall ships are there too.

It was finally 3pm (check-in time) so I wandered back to the hotel, checked in, was called strong by the bellboy who returned my suitcases to me, and got to my very nice room.

I didn't spring for a waterfront room, but I have a nice city view from my balcony.

I tried very hard to stay awake to a normal sleeping time, but couldnt' do it.  Combining wine and jett lag will do that.   I think I fell asleep around 5-ish, but didn't sleep the night through.  More on that in our next installment....
